Why Facade?

Good question. The funny thing about choosing this title was that it was effortless. I already had three titles in mind while I wrote the book but when I got to the last line of the book, it changed to Facade. One meaning of Facade is "an outward appearance that is maintained to conceal a less pleasant reality." With this title, you already wonder what the character is hiding. That's my intent.

The short explanation that goes along with the publicity of Facade says,

"To the naked eyes, Emma, a recent high school graduate, is beyond beautiful and smart, which is a combination that would give any girl an immeasurable sense of self-confidence. But as it turns out, the eyes are yet to discover and understand the real Emma. Adam, her saving angel who is wise beyond his years, wholeheartedly accepts the real Emma and teaches her to do the same."

While I can't give away too much about the book, know that there are life lessons that Emma learns, which are true for most of us:

  • Overcoming self-doubt
  • Learning not to choose the substitute over the real thing we want to do because of fear of failure
  • Not waiting until something drastic happens before we take the leap
That's all I'm going to share for now. Enjoy Facade and tell me what you think :)

How I Wrote It

"Wrote what?" You might ask. A book. Writing is a big deal for me. It's something I realized I loved to do after I re-read a journal I kept in high school and laughed at how funny it turned out to be. My thought process is so complicated that I feel the need to pen it down. I just start to write on any and everything, not limiting myself because I think that ideas shouldn't have boundaries. Z and S is a wonderful channel that has given me the opportunity to continue to practice my writing, although it is limited to non controversial topics.

I had never entertained the idea of publishing a book until I had a story that kept swimming in my head and then this one character became so important that she yielded branches. These branches were made up of  friends and family and just kept expanding. The story formed into something bigger that I had to write it down; I needed room in my head again because it was filled with Emma and her story. Yes, Emma is fictional. She is a combination of three real life ladies. One of them is a friend of mine; another is someone I met briefly; and the last is someone I've never met in person. My book is fictional, so the story line is made up.

In my case, there was no guide to how I started writing the book. I just got up one day and started to type. Of course I didn't start out with, "Once upon a time..." but there was a beginning and I knew part of her story. My task was to take you on the journey and not rush to get you to the end. During this writing process, I learned not second guess myself. Do not tell yourself that you're a bad writer and then abandon the story. If you need writing guides, they are everywhere - both hard copies and online. Use those helpful guides and then when your manuscript gets to a publisher, they will do some clean up too. Focus on your story and leave self-doubt about your writing ability out of the door.
