Fashion and Pets: Torture or Comfort?

I have always wondered why people dressed up their pets. I got several answers like "my dog gets cold" to "doesn't this make her look prettier?" Isn't the point of the fur on animals for protection from harm and for the regulation of body temperature? Won't the extra covering be uncomfortable for the animals? 

I have not come across a research that proves that outfits for animals are necessary. In the mean time, why can't we just let them be and focus on dressing ourselves instead.
