Why Buy What You Cannot Flaunt?

Some people buy ridiculously expensive items that can only be displayed and guarded with heavy security. Do these individuals buy these just for recognition? What else could be gained from owning these items if they cannot be used? I hear of wines that are auctioned for a fortune and when drunk, that's it. I hear of some purchases of paintings and the amount paid makes me scream. The other day I saw an overly expensive diamond encrusted purse that was priced at 3.8 million dollars. Why should a purse be made with as many diamonds as 4,517 and cost as much as 3.8 million dollars? Then there is the gold-plated toilet and the jewel encrusted bikini that cannot be touched by water. What will be my reason to buy such items? I guess it all boils down to the value that the buyer puts on the item. It certainly does not make sense why people would purchase items that they cannot use.

  1. Ok, let's be real here. Why would I in my wildest dream purchase an item for $3.8m? What happened to charity? Kids who need their lives to be saved and desperately need the money? The homeless? The needy in general? and the list goes on...YKW
